Each year, there’s one hot new superfruit and this year, exotic baobab seems to be the one.

Mintel, 2008

It has twice as many antioxidants as goji berries, and more calcium than milk. In fact, it may be the richest plant source of calcium on earth. It has more iron than red meat, more potassium than a banana and more magnesium than spinach. It is the African baobab fruit and it packs a powerful nutritional punch. African people have treasured the amazing baobab tree and its fruit for thousands of years. They call it “The Tree of Life”. Now we know why.
Baobab is now approved for sale in the EU and the USA is expected to give it the green light soon. Not only does this bring the unique tangy taste and nutritional benefits of baobab to consumers worldwide, but it will also help thousands of poor families in rural Africa. These people can secure life-changing income by harvesting and selling baobab fruit. The money they earn encourages them to protect their baobab trees and the surrounding woodlands. So not only could baobab be good for you, it is good for African people and the environment too.
Baobab is brought to consumers by PhytoTrade Africa, a non-profit trade association dedicated to developing trade in natural products for the benefit of poor rural communities in Southern Africa. We and our partners are organically certified by ECOCERT and led the way with gaining EU Novel Foods Regulation approval for the powder and extract, and have cleared the way in the US by achieving GRAS status for the powder.
